Today we drove south to go elephant trekking in the jungle. Grahame thought he was a natural when he got to ride on the elephant’s head all the way in. Our elephant was a female name Bunda. She was forty years old with no children – does that sound familiar? I don’t think she had any dogs… After a half an hour trek through the jungle we were sent on a walk to the waterfall – supposedly 1km away. About halfway along a local guy caught up to us in the bat caves and said he was supposed to be guiding us! As we were simply following a riverbed this seemed a bit of overkill. However he had a torch so we could have a good look around the bat caves (full of stalactites, stalacmites, tree roots and a few bats). He also spotted a few deadly snakes along the track so he did come in useful! Of course at the end of approximately 2km (measurements are different here) the waterfall was non-existent! Just a trickle that wouldn’t even wet your whistle! Anyway it was good exercise & it was quite cool and shady in the jungle so we turned around and walked back to the waiting elephants. On the way back Tracey got to ride on the head while Grahame sat up top – we were lucky – none of the other tourists seemed to be getting this opportunity – perhaps their guides didn’t want to walk! It was good fun and the elephants looked well-fed & happy. Our girl was quite playful, splashing us with her trunk &; continually stopping to forage for food – just like the terrible threesome on walks at home!
On the way home we stopped off at Khlang Noi Beach for a cheap lunch & so that Tracey could buy a t-shirt & then caught the taxi-truck back to our resort for a swim in the pool. Tracey finally managed to book in a massage which was great & we spent our last night on Koh Lanta at the resort restaurant eating pizza ; fried banana fritters (mmm yum!).
