23/01/2010 Friendly Locals

Flew from Tagbilaran to Laoag via Manila & then bussed to Vigan. Met an old university professor as we stepped off the bus who kindly showed us the way to some reasonable hotels near the town square (& helped us to avoid the hawkers). It was a busy night in Vigan with lots of people staying for the festival but we eventually found a vacancy right on the town square. We were quite excited at being so close to the action – until we realized that we would get no sleep here with the music thumping, people cheering & bikes revving outside our window all night!

We went to the festival that night & ate some local ‘delicacies’ such as corn pancakes & beef skewers but we think it was the ‘chicken’ on a stick that brought us undone (chicken’s intestines it turned out to be or as Grahame tried to convince us – chicken sausages!). Tracey was sick for a week after this mistake! The atmosphere of the festival was great though with all the locals dancing in the square & kids running around madly!

Stayed in Vigan, Philippines
